Tour of my family’s neighborhood in the 9th District
Getting off the tram in the 9th district on Währinger Straße
Währinger Straße was first mentioned in land registers in the 1300s
Cafe Weimar has been popular since it was established in 1918
Undoubtably, my grandparents were patrons of the cafe, it's a block away from where they lived
If you cross Währinger Straße, you'll find Prechtlgasse
Grandma Ricky, Grandpa Paul and Dad at a park somewhere in Vienna around 1938
Grandma Ricky, Grandpa Paul and Dad lived at Prechtlgasse 5 until they fled Vienna in 1939
The building was destroyed in the war and rebuilt, which is what the sign says
Their actual home probably looked more like this building, which is next door
Around the corner is a confectionary
During WWII they sold candy and plumbing supplies. I guess it was what the market demanded
Nice woman owns the store and the chocolate is yummy
No doubt, my grandparents brought my dad here for a sweet treat
Volksoper Theater is up the street a few blocks
After a performance at the theater, people would meet at the Weimar Cafe continue to sing the songs from the show.
